My New Year's Rituals
For me, NYE has long been filled with magic and excitement. Whether going out with friends or staying in alone, I love weaving these rituals into my celebration. They always make me feel more grounded and ready to take on the year ahead. I hope they enrich your experience too.
A ritualistic NYE bath. I think it’s important to soak away the year behind, allowing all that was to wash away, stepping in to what lies ahead as my feet hit the bath mat once again. Light candles, add salts and oils, play your favorite tunes as you soak in the wisdom to manifest your dreams in the year ahead.
The best food. Whether you’re feasting on charcuterie or your favorite (grain-free) pasta make sure you’re indulging in food that truly makes you feel good. One of my favorite memories is from a NYE I decided to stay home alone. I made myself the most delicious mushroom and spinach pasta, poured myself a glass of decadent red wine, snuggled up in cozy socks, wrapped myself in a blanket, and watched a feel good movie. I can still almost taste that pasta, but I can completely conjure the feelings of eating it. Good food has a way of simultaneously grounding us and connecting us to our sensuality. It’s the perfect combo for welcoming the New Year.
Essential oils. I’m sure you’re not surprised to see that this made the list. Yes, I use oils in my bath, but I also love to diffuse them throughout the house and even rub a little on the back of my neck or my third eye. Essential oils can help ease us into a feeling and open our spiritual side. Give it a try this year and see for yourself. Try an oil for spiritual insight such as Rosemary, Frankincense, or Sandalwood.
A magic-making session. Every New Year’s Day we have a family magic-making session and it’s one of my most beloved rituals. Break out the paper, crayons, markers, and colored pencils. Make a list or piece of artwork that holds your dreams for the year ahead. List intentions, goals, soul level desires.. any beauty you wish to draw into your life for the coming year. Share your wishes with those close to you. Keep your masterpiece in a place where you will see it regularly and visit your intentions during meditation time, asking for guidance and support.
Move. Finally, make sure to move at some point throughout the day. It can be gentle or higher intensity, whatever suits your fancy. Just do it! Movement clears energy and increases blood flow to our brain; perfect for releasing the year behind and summoning new energy for that dreaming session I mentioned above. Take a walk outside for grounding and connecting with nature. Practice some yoga to summon your inner hippie and zen out. Bonus points for layering essential oils with this one!
I hope these rituals inspire you and bring more light and love to all you do. May you have the most joyful and abundant year yet. Happy New Year!
