Mornin' Mama
On our first day in Indianapolis we woke up early enough to roll into the city just in time for brunch. For me, there's nothing like a boozy brunch to remind me I'm truly on holiday. As usual, I had been researching Indy restaurants for several days in preparation for our trip. I'm a total foodie at heart and am always looking for fun, new places to try in the cities we visit. Thanks to the Visit Indy site I found the perfect destination (they actually have a foodie section serving the food obsessed traveler like myself) - Good Morning Mama's.
The pics online looked really good and the menu seemed to have a wide enough selection to satisfy most any brunch craving. I was especially intrigued by all the mimosa chatter I was hearing. This brunch would be the kickoff to our holiday and if that doesn't call for a mimosa I don't know what does!
They don't take Sunday reservations, so we made sure to arrive early enough that even if we had to wait, we could still make the hockey game we'd planned on attending later that afternoon. Upon arrival we noticed several other people were ahead of us and were thinking we may be pushing it if we stayed. We decided to chance it and noticed pretty much right away that people were being seated rather quickly. This put our mind at ease and we only ended up waiting around twenty minutes or so. Totally reasonable.
The vibe in Good Morning Mama's was definitely chill. From the sunny entry with artistically painted walls to the tone of interaction with the hostess, this place was definitely inviting its patrons to unwind and forget the cares of the day. It was a bright, sunny day so there was plenty of room to wait inside or out and the people watching was fabulous. You could even order a coffee or mimosa while you waited if you were so inclined.
Once seated, we were happily greeted by a bright eyed woman with a big smile and bubbly personality. She immediately grabbed us our much needed coffee (hot cocoa for Jagman) and gave us a few minutes to browse the menu. After lots of consideration we eventually settled on what to eat and more beverages. Jagger chose a small order of Boomers Biscuits and Gravy. I couldn't resist the Eggs in Purgatory with a Mimosa and Kevin opted for Chicken Fried Steak and a Bloody Maria. Since brunch isn't brunch without something sweet we also placed an order of Italian Fried Biscuits rolled in cinnamon sugar.
In just a few minutes we had our cocktails and the biscuits shortly followed. Our drinks were on point. My mimosa was mostly champagne (just the way I like it) and Kevin's bloody maria was equally balanced. As for the biscuits, let's just say they were devoured in a matter of minutes. Good Morning Mama's may call these biscuits, but for me, they were more like doughnuts or pastries. Either way, they were absolutely delicious, not to mention light and airy. A perfect starter. While they were good on their own, they came served with a side of apple butter that pushed them over the top. Boy were they tasty!
Next out was our food. Yumm-o! My eggs were perfectly poached. No runny whites in sight, and the yolk, beautifully golden. While I didn't try Jagger's biscuits and gravy he assured me that they were out of this world. Judging by the smile on his face and considering he ate every bite, I believe him. The same went for Kevin's chicken fried steak. He ate until he couldn't, and then, still wanted to eat some more. As a matter of fact, he was so excited about his food that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture of it! He was too busy eating to indulge me. What's a girl to do?
Once brunch was over our tummies were happy and our spirits lifted. What a start to our few days away! Now, off to the hotel for a quick check-in before the hockey game fun!
